The Plough and the Stars
Directed by Brian Hosford
From November 1915 to Easter 1916, as the rebellion builds to a climax half a mile away, the disparate residents of a Dublin tenement go about their lives, peripheral to Ireland’s history.
We bring The Plough and the Stars to The Millbank Theatre. First staged in The Abbey Theatre in 1926, a year before Rush Dramatic Society was founded, this play evokes both the passion and the despair of the era.
This production of Sean O’Casey’s classic forms the centrepiece of our 90th season. Writing the play in the decade following the Easter Rising, O’Casey had reflected on the true nature of what it had actually achieved and how the retrospective view should be portrayed through the lives of those who lived in poverty a mere stone’s throw from the GPO.
Our youth group, MYTH, is well represented in the ranks of this cast, representing for them their first entry into a full-length Millbank play.
The production will come complete with a souvenir programme, along with a public exhibition of much of our archive material from our 90 years in theatre.
The play itself will be preceded by an informative talk each night on the political, social and cultural scenes context the times. With great value group rates available, we particularly welcome school audiences.
This is one not to be missed at The Millbank Theatre.Book Now
